 Historical background

It is important to analyze the historical background when introducing West Padduvasnuwara Divisional Secretariat, located in Padduvasnuwara Electoral Division, Kurunegala District, North West Province. Accordingly, the historical world-famous city of Paduvasnuwara is located in the center of our divisional secretariat. There are two theories regarding the historical significance of Paduvasnuwara kingdom. According to one, Pandukabhaya or Padduvasdev, who became sovereign after King Vijaya, the founder of the Sinhalese monarchy, established his kingdom here around 414. Digha Gamini. The remains of the king's palace and the sites identified as tusks are now maintained as archaeological tombs.

According to Mr. Senarath Paranavithana, King Maha Parakramabahu, who brought the country under one flag, established his kingdom in Padduvasnuwara while staying in the Polonnaru Kingdom, and during that time he served as the Vice-King. Therefore, the ruins currently seen in the Paduvasnuwara compound are said to be the remaining parts of his palace and other administrative and religious structures.

 Administrative background

The beginning of the administrative activities of the city of Paduvasnuwara, which has such historical value, is mentioned after the 60's. Accordingly, Hettipola Divisional Tax Officer/Divisional Assistant Governor (AGA) will start his administrative activities with four Koralas as follows.

  • Tisava Chorale
  • Girathalana Chorale
  • Angamuwa Chorale
  •  power door Chorale

But according to the recommendation of the Commission for Determining Parliamentary Constituencies, the new constituency of Padduwasnuwara was established before the 1977 general election. Baladora Koralea was annexed to the seat of Nikaweratiya, so a new regional secretariat was established in Kobeigane. After that Hettipola Divisional Secretariat Division was limited to Paduvasnuwara Electoral Division and it was known as Paduvasnuwara Divisional Secretariat Division. It administered with the following five Koralas, 103 Village Officer Domains and a Katupota sub-office.

    • Tisava Chorale
    • Girathalana Chorale
    • Angamuwa Chorale
    •  UthuruYathikaha Chorale
    • Karadhapaththu Chorale

In 1990, following the decentralization of administration, the Paduvasnuwara Divisional Secretariat was established. As some were divided into Wariyapola Divisional Secretariat Division and Katupotha Divisional Secretariat which is run as a sub-office, Grama Niladhari was limited to 78 Divisions. With the establishment of Mavi Ala East Divisional Secretariat, this division was renamed as Padduwasnuwara Divisional Secretariat - West. The number of village officer domains was reduced to 64. But in 2013, before the Paduvasnuwara-East divisional secretariat, three village official domains once again came under this divisional secretariat.
